How many times have you stopped yourself from wearing something you loved or trying a new style because a video or influencer told you not to? What starts as helpful advice often comes from a good place. We are all just trying to figure out what works and learning to trust our inner style voice along the way. But over time, those tips can start to feel like rules. I hear it all the time from clients during lessons. So many versions of “people say.”
“People say no shimmer shadow for mature eyes.”
“People say only use neutral eye shadows.”
“People say going gray changes my color palette.”
“People say no bright lip colors for mature lips.”
“People say skinny jeans are out.”
“People say to use only your fingers to apply foundation.”
“People say black mascara is too harsh.”
“People say don’t mix metals when accessorizing.”
Why Style and Makeup Advice Doesn’t Always Work for Everyone
There’s one thing I discovered from watching hundreds of makeup and style reels: sometimes those “People” don’t know YOU. They don’t know your skin, your eyes, your fashion personality, your budget, lifestyle, or your figure. In fact, when a client comes to a lesson and they chime in with “people say…” I hear them breathe a sigh of relief when I give them permission to not listen to THOSE people.
You don’t need to follow all makeup or style trends. I agree that some influencers have marvelous tips that truly work, but don’t fall into the trap of assuming their advice is exactly suited for you. It’s kind of like the proverbial sales clerk who says, “It’s so you,” as you try on an outfit.
Focusing on Style That Works For You
1. Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment
Style is meant to evolve! Try new silhouettes, colors, or makeup techniques, even if they’re outside your comfort zone. You might be surprised by what works when you let yourself play.
2. Read Resources That Empower You
Look for style content that celebrates individuality. Attend styling and make-up lessons. My article on dressing your body shape is a great place to start.
3. Skip the Trends That Don’t Serve You
Trends can be fun, but they shouldn’t convince you they’re the only way to look your best. Chasing every trend can be exhausting and expensive. If something doesn’t align with your taste, your lifestyle, or your comfort level, it’s perfectly okay to skip it.
4. Work With a Professional Stylist
I encourage you to study, learn, experiment, and connect with beauty professionals. They should take time to get to know you and ask a lot of questions to understand your budget, skin needs, makeup skill level, lifestyle, and personality. One size does not fit all.
5. Pay Attention to How Clothes or Make-Up Make You Feel
Not just how they look. If something makes you feel powerful, beautiful, or totally ‘you,’ that’s a win for your personal style!
