TLDR: Dressing up for yourself doesn’t mean you need somewhere special to go. Wearing the clothes, makeup, colors, and accessories you love can help you feel more confident, comfortable, and like yourself, even on an ordinary day.
In my experience working with women here in Albuquerque, whether it’s through wardrobe organization or a makeup session, I often see closets full of clothes or new makeup that has been barely used for months, maybe even years. I know the feeling. There have been many times when I’ve looked at something and thought, “I’m saving that for something special.” Maybe it’s a pretty blouse, a good lipstick, the earrings I love, or a perfume that feels a little too nice for an ordinary day.
But the thing is, should we really wait for a special occasion? We can get into the habit of saving things for “someday.” We save the good dishes, the expensive candles, the beautiful clothes, and sometimes even our favorite version of ourselves. But life is happening now. There are so many everyday moments that may not seem that memorable, but they can feel a little more special when you show up feeling your best.

You don’t always need something new to feel good about how you look. Sometimes it’s simply about wearing and enjoying the things you already have.
I hear women say, “I don’t want to look too made up,” or “I’ll save that color for when I go somewhere.” But makeup doesn’t have to be reserved for a special event (Although it’s always nice to get a little more dressed up for special occasions). A little lipstick can change how you feel walking out the door. A swipe of blush, a favorite eye color, or simply taking an extra few minutes with your makeup can be a small way of saying, “I’m worth the effort.”
And no, I’m not suggesting you wear a full face of makeup to take out the trash! I’m talking about finding your version of feeling put together. For one woman, that might be lipstick and mascara. For another, it might be a little blush and earrings. For someone else, it might be a beautiful scarf with jeans and a simple top. There isn’t one right way.
We often have clothes hanging in our closets that we love but rarely wear. Maybe they’re “too nice.” Maybe we’re waiting until we lose a few pounds. Maybe we don’t know where we’d wear them. Maybe we’re worried that people will wonder why we’re so dressed up.
Here’s my advice: wear them. Wear the pretty blouse to lunch. Wear the statement earrings with your jeans. Wear the shoes you love. Put on the color that makes you smile. You don’t need a party invitation. You don’t need a vacation. You don’t need a birthday. And you don’t need to wait until you look different, weigh less, or feel younger.

One of the things I love about working with women on their personal style here in Albuquerque is helping them realize that getting dressed isn’t about impressing everyone else. It’s about feeling like yourself.
Sometimes it comes down to a few simple things:
They can make you feel more confident, more comfortable, and a little more ready to participate in your own life. And that’s really what I mean when I talk about honest beauty. It’s not about looking perfect or trying to look younger, and it’s definitely not about following every trend. It’s about discovering what makes you feel good and then actually wearing it. That’s what dressing up for yourself can look like.
Start by choosing one piece you love and pairing it with something more casual. A pretty blouse with jeans or statement earrings with a simple outfit can make something feel more wearable for an ordinary day.
Pay attention to the colors, clothes, makeup, and accessories you naturally feel good wearing. Personal style isn’t about following every trend. It’s about discovering what works for you and actually enjoying it.
Take a closer look at why you aren’t wearing them. If you love a piece but have been waiting for the right occasion, try finding a way to wear it now. If it no longer fits your lifestyle or feels like you, it may be time to let it go.
You don’t have to wait for something special to enjoy the things that make you feel good. Sometimes an ordinary lunch, a trip to the grocery store, or dinner at home is reason enough to wear something you love.
So here’s your September challenge: Find one thing you’re saving for a special occasion and wear it this week.
It might be your favorite lipstick, a blouse with a great color, the earrings you bought but haven’t worn, or the perfume sitting in the back of the cabinet. Don’t wait. Put it on and make an ordinary day feel a little more special. Because the truth is, you don’t need a special occasion. You are the occasion.
Honestly beautiful, exquisitely you.
