In my work as a personal stylist in Albuquerque, I’m always keeping an eye on trends, but even more so on which ones actually make getting dressed feel easier and more enjoyable. While doing some research one evening, I came across a styling concept that’s been gaining traction across social media, and it immediately stood out to me for how practical it is. It’s called the 7-point rule, and it’s a simple guideline you can use to elevate your outfits without overthinking them. Today, I’m excited to walk you through what it is, how to use it, and how it can work in your everyday wardrobe. 

What Is the 7-Point Rule? 

The 7-point rule offers a simple framework for getting dressed by assigning a point value to each piece in your outfit. A well-balanced look typically lands between 7 and 10 points. However, it’s important to remember that not every item carries the same weight. A basic top may count as one point, while a piece with more character or visual interest could be worth two.  

How to Start Using the 7-Point Rule in Your Own Closet 

If you’re curious but not quite sure how to start, here’s an easy way to apply it step by step. 

Step 1: Assign Points  

  • 1 Points = Basics  

Simple and classic items that are solid in design, color, and pattern.  

Examples: solid tee, classic jeans, neutral flats, a delicate necklace. 

  • 2 Points = Statement  

Items with a standout detail, color, or silhouette that make them more memorable. 

Examples: bold shoes, a patterned blouse, a printed scarf, or wide-leg pants 

Step 2: Tally your Outfit  – Add the points for all your clothing and accessories.  

Step 3: Aim for 7-8 points – That’s the sweet spot where your outfit feels styled but never overdone. 

Basics: 1 Point
