So many of my clients, even the fifty-somethings, are complaining about aging and lines and how they don’t feel confident anymore. Looking your best is not about looking twenty or even thirty anymore. It’s about learning how to enhance your natural beauty, so you feel confident for the age and season you are in. You deserve to feel honestly beautiful. As we embrace aging gracefully, our makeup routine deserves an update too. Here are some tried-and-true makeup tips for mature skin to help you celebrate your natural beauty.
“Get rid of that noise in your head that says you’re not young anymore. It’s not about looking younger; it’s about looking better.“
Bobbi Brown
1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Dewy = Youthful
Starting with well-hydrated skin is key. Mature skin tends to be drier, so make sure to use a hydrating primer and a foundation that offers a dewy finish. This not only adds a youthful luminosity but also ensures your makeup doesn’t settle into fine lines.
Glo Skin Beauty has a new primer, Hydrating Primer, that is just the solution to starting with hydrated skin. Check it out here.
2. Find The Right Foundation For Mature Skin
Less is More
In the world of mature makeup, the mantra is ‘less is more.’ Don’t pile on layers and layers of under-eye concealer. Lightly blend on the inner corner of the eye and a bit on the occipital bone and press lightly to blend. This concealer is lightweight and corrective powered by diamond powder for that luminosity and radiant skin effect. I love this little triangular sponge that’s perfect for blending under eye and inner corner of the eye.
Choose a lightweight foundation that provides coverage without feeling heavy (Clients love Glo Skin Beauty Luminous Liquid Foundation to instantly revitalize the skin with a soft-focus effect, and it has SPF 18). A sheer touch allows your natural radiance to shine through. Apply foundation starting on the center of your face and using a blender sponge or, my favorite, Kabuki brush to push and press foundation blending more coverage from center to less product on the outside of the face.
3. Say Yes To Creams
Creams are your everything now
One of my go-to makeup tips for mature skin is that cream-based products are your new best friends. Cream blushes, eyeshadows, and highlighters blend effortlessly into the skin, creating a soft, seamless look. They also add a healthy, natural flush without settling into lines.
4. Focus On The Eyes
As we mature our eyes change dramatically
Eyes are the windows to the soul, and they deserve some attention. As we mature our eye area changes dramatically. Learning the best eye shadow techniques to disguise hooded lids, and discoloration is not hard. Eye Shadow application is my most requested lesson and there are also many online tutorials out there. Using the right brushes and the right colors is key. And yes, we can still wear some shimmer shadows, but it matters where you apply it. Want to learn these tips and tricks for yourself? 5. Define Those Brows
Your new makeup secret weapon
I’ll let you in on a pro makeup tip for mature skin: Well-groomed brows frame the face and provide an instant (and free) lift. Use a soft pencil or powder to define your brows, opting for a shade close to your natural color. This subtle touch can work wonders.
6. Be Mindful Of The Liner
Soft lines are best
When it comes to eyeliner, a soft line along the lash line is best. Opt for slate gray or brown. Heavy black liner, especially under the full lash line is aging.
If you’re a bottom eyeliner fan, reach for an angular brush, dampen it, and use eye shadow to lightly line the outer corner of your bottom lash line. It will give you the definition, but not the severity, of the liquid or pencil liner. Keep eyeliner on your top lash line thin to make your eyes look naturally framed without going overboard.
7. Nourish Your Lips
Unforgiving makeup tips for mature skin: matte lipstick
Unfortunately, it’s true. Matte lipsticks, although trendy, can be a bit unforgiving on mature lips. Choose hydrating formulas with a hint of gloss or satin finish. This not only adds a youthful plumpness but also feels comfortable throughout the day. For a natural look, choose a lip color one to two shades darker than your natural lip color, a color that looks good when you try it on with no makeup.
8. Set It Right
The best way to set makeup without looking dry
A light dusting of translucent powder can set your makeup without emphasizing dryness. Focus on the T-zone and areas prone to shine, leaving the rest of your luminosity untouched. Always set your concealer with a matte powder or matte ivory shadow and press lightly with a triangular puff. Try hydrating or setting mist to finish.
9. My Top Makeup Tip For Mature Skin: Skincare Is Key
The ageless glow starts before the primer
Before reaching for makeup, invest in a solid skincare routine. Hydrated, well-cared-for skin provides the perfect canvas for makeup, making it easier to achieve that sought-after ageless glow. Use a hydrating mist like Glo Skin Beauty’s HA-Revive Hyaluronic Mist after cleanser, serum, and moisture to add to the effectiveness of your skincare products and lock in moisture. It’s a game-changer!
10. Confidence Is The Best Accessory
Last but certainly not least: confidence
Remember, the most beautiful thing you can wear is your confidence. Embrace your honest image, celebrate your uniqueness, and let your makeup routine enhance the beauty that comes with every passing year.
